Stolen Lyrics

Ill appologise in advance for this but i dont remember anyone ever mentioning this but i refuse to believe that it hasnt been!

Anyway - it has just been pointed out to me that the lyrics in French Dog Blues - all i ever wanted was the one with the flag......... is stolen from Mr Ian Browns Deep Pile Dreams on Unfinished Monekey Business and he is credited on the album cover.

Has this been discussed?
starfucker

Yeah, like about a year ago when we first heard French Dog Blues.
It's not news, sorry.
Wa Wa

I heard the "permanently plastered pissed up bastard" bit was lifted from another song too. Is that true?

'Baddies Boogie' was a song by one of Mick's old bands, but I think all they took was the title. Not sure, though.
Wa Wa

Hmm I'm sure I'd heard that lyric was lifted from another band's song.
dean_bpm

Pete quite often uses bits from other peoples songs and poems in his songs. Wasnt some of a Emily Dickinson poem used in 'At the Flophouse'???? My supervisor at work tells me he has used one or two morrisey lines aswell.
Quadrophenia

I thought "I Love you (But you're green)" would have been an obvious one? Lines taken from Brighton Rock by Graeme Green. "Fuck Forever is" a Sex Pistols title. "What Katie Did" lyrics are in a Chas n Dave song too. The Line "Gin in teacups.." is from 1984 by George Orwell. I can't think of any more at the moment but I am sure there are more lines nicked from somewhere or other.
the shambolian

Ian Brown has writing credits on French Dog Blues.....
comrade

Erm is it just me or is everyone completely stating the obvious here?

Doherty is well known for referencing alot in his songs, even musically ("can you play no fun?" followed by stooges riffage)

Infact so are many many great songwriters since the beginning of pop music.

Have fun pointing out certain references but by using the word "nicking" then youre completely missing the point.

god that sounds a bit nasty, i wasnt directly reffering to anyone, but you get what I mean?
Quadrophenia

Yeah it does sound nasty. It's plagiarising and I know what it means - I am neither naive or thick. Saying that, you could think that our own "lyrical genius" could think up his own material, no?

I forgot about those two.

I don't mind a bit plagiarizing as long as its done creatively.
UpTheHinge

There's a huge thread on org.uk about "influences" in Shambles/Libs songs if anyone's interested. Covers pretty much everything. You need to be logged in though.

I'm beginning to seriously doubt Peter Doherty is anything approaching a genius.

WTF do all the Peter pretenders do now with the porkpie hats and rosery beads?

What Katie Did and What Katie Did Next are old books, crap ones mind. Chas 'N' Dave stole them too.

I'm pretty sure every line from every song apart from something like "HSIDHFISDHFISHDIFHSDIFH" has been produced in some form over time...

I was a bit upset ages ago when i was flicking through The Beatles BBC sessions and heard Things We Said Today...:

You say you will love me
If I have to go.
You'll be thinking of me,
Somehow I will know.

Last Post On The Bugle is one of my favouritist favourite songs and was upset Pete had just changed the lyric round to "If I have to go, I will be thinking of your love, somehow you'll know i'll be thinking of your love."
Quadrophenia

Narcissist not so much steals I don't think, because I cant remember the book verbatim, but refers to The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

Good book that, Picture Of Dorian Gray. Very Happy
Refences are ok though, i think it's healthy and is one of the reasons I loved The Libertines cause of references of ye olde poets etc.
The romanticism is what attracted me to them i suppose, but Im not too bothered by all these stolen lyrics cause I still love the songs! Very Happy
Jason

I don't mind direct plagiarism in music ever......which is why I love Oasis so much, it's not where you get the music or lyrics, it's what you as an individual do with them that counts I guess......

And he's obviously done some wonderous things with the lyrics at times
chio

would be so interesting to put together a list of these.....
Quadrophenia

The part about scooping up the wine from Back From The Dead is from Son Of A Gun by The La's

Speaking of Orwell and gin, Gang of Gin was originally called Victory Gin, and victory gin is the drink that is most common in 1984.

Baddies Boogie is indeed pretty blatantly lifted from a Ferrymen song called 'Undercover Elephant'.

If you mean the title...then you'll find most titles are from a song somewhere...purposely or not

Somebody losing their faith in Mr Doherty?
Quadrophenia

We're just having a minor tiff at the moment.

It annoys me how people bang on about him being an absolute genius when he just does his job and plagiarises as much as everyone else, if not more so.

People who post on www.frenchdogblues.com please do not be offended by my OPINION.

Yes I'm in the exact same boat. I like Babyshambles tunes, but have made friends and girlfriends through love of the Libs. Thats the difference for me anyway, The Libertines have literally been life changing.
