Petes upcoming solo album

soooo, judging but recent talks by Adam on his blog etc...looks like its not too far away from being finished. Still could be ages till we hear it though...
I just created this thread for general talk about the album really...(i never go on fdb so sorry if this is old)

I really don't want to see any recycled songs on the album, as much as i love old school unrealeased pete songs, an album of newies would be so much better
Who produced the whole album? Jake Fior???
Songs that could be on the album...Salome, Darksome Sea, Alone Again (or Love), My White City Girl (is this sa pete song?), Palace of bone (any non-live versions of this about?)
I hope the album is more than just pete and his guitar....hopefully something extra that steps away what babyshambles does (in some of their songs).
Rich

The album might (might being the word) out in the next couple of months.  As for the tracklist, who knows.

Peter played 6 to 8 songs from it at a recent flat gig, from what I've been told they were pretty special.

For lovers, salome, death around the eyes, through the looking glass, arcady, broken love songs and 1939 returning are the songs I know about, whether they will appear on the album is anyone's guess.

The solo record does appear to have Adam, Drew and Graham Coxon on it.
pk!

I'm not sure who the producer is, but judging by his presence in youtube footage, I'd guess it's Stephen Street.
Rich

Jake Fior was producing it (a few demos knocking about at the moment) but I'm sure it's Stephen Street now.

The versions I've heard of Salome are right mouth watering and the finished version sounds even better but unfortunally that was one gig I didn't make having been to the previous three Rolling Eyes I'll put the versions I have up later.
Rich

According to a french site, the album is coming out on the 9th march.  More details to follow...

When is Doherty's birthday as a matter of interest?

Oh the talk of a solo happened on .net, many fathoms ago...

It was coming out 9th March then, too.

Loads of information about the solo record in this article, I think we've almost the tracklist now.

According to NME, Coxon plays on all but one track.

Which to be honest, sounds pretty fucking mouth watering.

Graham defends Pete via the blur board..

'I actually like pete as a person a lot. he is very funny, warm and charming. he has rough press and not surprisingly so..
he is also very impressionable, quite vulnerable, rather too trusting and needlessly gets himself into some difficulties- basically and unfortunately for him, he is a scumbag magnet. i would not have entertained the idea of playing on his record if i had not heard such alot of promise when listening to the demos.
i really do think its easy to think pete is a waster...i also have been more than a little angry with him at times for pissing his talent up the wall on too many occasions...but i think when he sees thru the murk at what opputunities are there for him he can really come up with the goods... well i think he did with these songs anyway. some songs here touched me quite deep to be honest...and lyrically i think hes bang on with this record...'
aussieshambler

fucking hell....whens he gonna write some new songs?!?!?!
Im still gonna buy it and all, but i hope it ain't gonna be alot of acoustic or slow stuff......not the main reason i got into Pete's music to be honest. I love salome though.

Graham always puts a different slant on the bones of a song.
Rich

I was hoping for another version of for lovers, but am quite looking forward to it.  Can't wait for death around the eyes Very Happy
Ricky Foley

Fuck me backwards and sideways!! Excuse the language but im pretty darn excited about pretty much each track on here. Never thought Lady Don't Fallbackwards would make it on the for a start. Im looking forward to hearing the single, hope for cool b-sides!! Very Happy

NME

Arcadie: Pitter-patter drums and folk-jaunt acoustic finger-picking from Graham Coxon on this Dylan-esque opener suggest that Pete’s album could be a ‘Freewheeling Pete Doherty’-style affair. This’ll be familiar to fans who’ve forked out for Pete’s low-key London shows over the past year.

Last Of The English Roses: ‘The Freewheeling Pete Doherty’? Scrunch that idea into a ball and take aim for the wastepaper basket. This, the album’s lead single, sounds like Gorillaz. Murky bass, gloopy heartbeat drums, harmonica – without Shaun Ryder popping up halfway through and drunkenly shouting “IT’S DARE!” this couldn’t be more reminiscent of the work of Damon Albarn’s ‘nana-chomping side project. Except, of course, instead of Albarn’s nonchalant croon we’ve got Pete’s somewhat more distinctive vocal effort.

The lyrics too could only really be Doherty’s, cutting gutter’n’stars contemporary references with his romanticised view of English heritage – singing about a girl who knows her “Kappas from her Reeboks” then “her Winstons from her Enochs”. So far, so completely unlike anything Pete’s ever recorded before.

1939 Returning: n acoustic-based effort with filmic strings and an Eastern riff, apparently ‘1939 Returning’ was written with a view to getting Amy Winehouse to add some warbles to it. There’s no Wino here, no remnant of backward-looking jazz-pop, instead it's an atmospheric swirl that fits with ‘Arcadie’ as one of the more ‘bare bones’ efforts here.

A Little Death Behind The Eyes: A Scott Walker-esque string duvet sweeps over this one – has Pete been listening to ‘Scott 4’… or ‘The Age Of The Understatement'? Either way, this is the song on the album most likely to ever appear in a Bond flick, and it features a line Pete has said was written by Carl Barat: “Your boyfriend’s name was Dave, I was bold and brave, and now you’re mine”. The rogue!

Salome: The downbeat death of ‘A Little Death…’ segues wonderfully into the hungover Eastern acoustic guitar riff of ‘Salome’ – a song that’s been kicking around in the Doherty solo cannon for yonks and yonks. More strings and brutal but softly-delivered imagery (“the head of John The Baptist on a plate”, anyone?), it’s about as far from ‘Fuck Forever’ as you can get without the help of a space shuttle.

Through The Looking Glass: A song originally cooked up in during Libertines songwriting sessions in France between the Libs’ two albums, ‘Through The Looking Glass’ is the song that most resembles a full band effort on the album. A bulky-based mid-pacer, here Graham Coxon’s guitars are at their most recognisable, the overall effect being a heavy Britpop strike half-way between Babyshambles and early Blur. A possible single?

Sweet By And By: Wow. Are we in some kind of 1940s upper class tea party? Not quite, actually the tinkly piano and jazz-parp trumpets suggest we’re in a jaunty illegal whiskey den in New York, 60 years back. And maybe Pete’s had a few too many tumblers of tongue-shrivelling bourbon – towards the end of this he does sound rather… merry. Yup, this album’s eclectic.

Palace Of Bone: e don’t think James Skelly is the suing type – possibly a good thing, as ‘Palace Of Bone’, or at least the intro, is pretty Coral-tastic to say the least – ‘Pass It On’ quite literally. In reality this is probably Pete’s obsession wit The La’s becoming more prominent on this understated Liverpudlian-sounding song.

Sheepskin Tearaway:
Another tender acoustic’n’piano-based effort, this time a duet between Pete and singer Dot Allison, who has joined the Babyshambler to perform it live at various solo gigs over the past year. Not quite a cousin to ‘What Katy Did’ off the Libs’ second album but at least some kind of daughter of an aunt’s sister who you know you’re related to in some way. Babyshambles’ Drew McConnell’s stand-up bass and loungey piano add depth to this sweet, drifting song.

Broken Love Song: eemember Wolfman? ‘For Lovers’, from 2004? He is credited with co-writing this. An earlier version was recorded with producer Jake Fior, but this new effort features Wolfy on guitar, building a creeping bass path to a blustering chorus – “They are the loneliest” repeated on possibly the most prominent hook on an album which, as Pete has said himself, is a rather uncommercial effort.

New Love Grows On Trees: From the blustery ‘Broken Love Song’ back to a cinematic bass-sweep’n’acoustic-tied effort. An air raid siren moans in mournfully over one of the more lyrically deft songs on the album, Pete singing, “Are you still talking to, All of those dead film stars, like you used to?/And are you still thinking of, all of those pretty rhymes/And perfect crimes, like you used to love?”. This had been kicking around the ‘Shambles canon for a while before Pete decided to use it here.

Lady, Don’t Fall Backwards: An understated two-and-a-half minutes of acoustic guitar and echoing Richard Hawley-esque electric guitar meandering in the background to close the album. Here Pete gets all romantic – “Every giro day dress me like a ladyboy… if we make love in the morning I see your eyes look like two marbles in your head”. A downbeat organ, “Come on fall into my arms” repeated over the final strum, and that’s Pete’s solo album done.

Gorillaz?!

I wonder how graham felt about that?
Rich

I just need Salome and death to leak, can wait for the rest Laughing maybe!
Ricky Foley

A Little Death Around The Eyes and Broken Love Song are probably the 2 im least excited about. Acardy (how dare he change the spelling!!!), Last Of The English Roses, Through The Looking Glass, Salome and Lady Don't Fall Backwards are the ones im really looking forward to!! I can't wait for it to come out, if been wanting a solo album since Pete got the boot from The Libertines, yet another 7 or 8 weeks seems like a lifetime away still!!!
Plus there's part of me that still doesn't trust the NME when it comes toe Pete Doherty solo album dates!! Laughing
Rich

I was reminded last night somewhere else about the high security on this record, looks like we're going to have to wait for this.

I'm sure afew radio rips of some of the songs will be unofficially released when the promotion starts. Twisted Evil

It's name been given a title Grace/Wastelands http://www.nme.com/news/pete-doherty/42120
Not sure if I like it or not yet, but then again it's the music that counts!
And on a random note, Coxon's involvement made it into the local paper!http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/4051221.Colchester__Blur_star_s_collaboration_with_Pete_Doherty/ Nothing special, just didn't expect to see it in the Gazette! Laughing

Im really loving the overall sound of the album from the 5 tracks that have been released do far. I think when you play the album from start to finish it's definately going to have one of those "album" feels rather than a compilation of songs put together. People over on FDB have described the songs as have a film soundtrack feel to them and I think that really does sum it up. The album is going to be a nice little treat, im hoping my pre-order from Amazon will arrive on the day so that that I can listen to 20 times before I go to him at Norwich UEA that night! Very Happy
Favourite songs in order so far are:
Lady Don't Fall Backwards.
Im really glad they kept this one really simple= Heart
New Love Grows On Trees.
I much prefer this to the demo as I was never too fussed with the demos before, loving the atmosphere being created in the background. Very Happy
Last Of The English Roses.
The vocals on this one are really great and I like the guitars. I also think the production is rather good and glad they didn't leave it stripped down. I prefer the album version to the Late Late show one, though he's voice sounded great on the tv and it's really nice to have two different versions you can go back to like with Beg, Steal Or Borrow, which is a favourite of mine both on the e.p. and the Jonathan Ross show.
Broken Love Song
I don't think much of the lyrics untill it gets to the part about being in he's cell and then it gets really great, but it does seem like lyrically two songs with the "take a broken love song..."and first "loneliest" part not seem to fit with the rest. I still think Pete could have got a better vocal part laid down too, but still is a brilliant song.
A Little Death Around The Eyes
The music to this is fantastic and really seems to fit in from what i've heard from the rest of the album. I've never quite rated the demo version and was hoping for added lyrics as it really only has one verse. Was a bit disapointed that "fi fye fo fum..." has been rehashed as that was in Sticks and Stones. Confused
I really can't wait for the album to wait as I now have even higher hopes for the other songs than I did before hearing these five! Roll on Arcady, 1939 Returning, Salome and Sweet By and By!
Rich
