Okay doke...

I have recently come across the idea of putting my biterness into word form, and write myself a book....yes, it does show I actually do want something from my life and could very well fail to massive proportions and break me to become even more bitter.....

But anyway, as music is a subject I know better than any other it is on the subject of this, and particularly it's obsessive fanbase......sooooo, being a babyshambles forum, and being known for having many lunatic fans....whats the worst thing you've said about Babyshambles in terms of their unparralled greatness?.....

I am trawling through FDB as we speak as well......

Thank you for your help and any suggestions are greatly appreciated Very Happy

maybe change it to best thing you've said...obsessives won't think anything they've said is "worst" Laughing
Jason

Good point, What is the best thing said, about the greatness of babyshambles....or one you've read and thought "thats a little over the top"

"Pete is one of the last great geniuses of songwriting" being my favourite so far.
Beau Carter

"A True punk of the 21st centry"....
Jason

Who said it?......I need to know the source, thank you for the quote though
Jason

Not Babyshambles, but these fans make FDB look soo normal its unbelievable

Highlights include, "If MJ goes to prison would you kill yourself?" (a startling amount of people said yes) "Your best MJ dream" and "Why is MJ so amazing?"

I want an MJ dream.

thats cool.... i have different drafts & bits n pieces of stories, chapters, random rubbish, diaries and stuff in a big box that i have been thinking i should so something with for ages.... id love to write fiction though...
Jason

Yeah, me too....but I thought I'd do something I know a lot about first, the research is fair piling up though.....Got a phone interview with a woman who just admitted over an email she would actually die for Morrissey, was rather worrying.
chio

ha ha.... id say a few of my friends would have said the same thing a few years back!!!! now they are all about damien dempsey.... an irish singer with total obsesso fans!

wow... how do you find the people to interview.... good luck with it all .... oh and i would deffo read a book like that... v interesting!
Jason

I spent time trawling through the forums for all the bands, Smiths fans were by far the easiest to find...trying to get in contact with a 16 year old arctic monkeys fan to see if I can use the picture of her bedroom with her consent, it's something else.....

chio

o my fucking god wow! and i thought i fancied alex james when i was 16.... with a few posters in my school locker!!!!

that is shocking!!!! god the blind belief in things when you are young... funny!!!
Jason

She is quite the legend on the arctic monkeys forum.

Calls the band "her babies" takes days off school in preparation for going to see them live......I don't that kind of passion is too normal.
chio

ha ha ha... freeaky!
are smiths fans the most obsesso??? what other bands??
cure? rem? springsteen? u2?
im obsesso over dead milkmen & sebadoh.. hahah...
Jason

Prince, still trying to track down the guy who changed his name by deed poll to "the artist formely known as..." which is a story I read years ago, but still trying to find it...i've emailed the archivers at NME to see if they have the story....

Michael Jackson has some pretty bad ones, sent an email to a guy who has 6000+ photographs of Michael Jackson, writes inspired poetry about him etc.....absolutely unbelievable

Britney, Famous youtube fella I sent a myspace message to still got no reply, but he terrifies the living daylights out of me anyway....
chio

ohhhh,,,,, chris crocker???? my friend keeps sending me his vids (non britney stuff) he is funny at times...
Jason

Haha, he is mentally unbalanced so I dunno if he liked me mentioning the word "obsession"

The famous smiths/morrissey collections.....pretty much double of the size of my whole cd collection.

chio

sigh.... that kinda moz love is kinda romantic.....
Jason

Lets take the romance away swiftly and move on to more up to date and a little more fangirlish

"MCR has saved my life and i am so proud to call myself a fan of MCR. The music is amazing in so many ways and they are the greatest influences. Meeting Gerard 9/20/07 was the greatest day of my life and miracle for me and seeing them live 5/8/07 was the second greatest day of my life. They're great for working around the rumors and not letting the rumors bring them down. They're amazing for not caring about fame or money, just caring about the music and the fans and all the lives they're saving. This band is the reason I'm still alive and the greatest thing for me to come across in my life <3"

A band that don't do it for the money, who charge £65 a ticket to see them at the o2 arena....I love it.

Oh dear, that reminds me of Alan Partridge's fan. Glory be!!

There is a guy who drinks in king tuts who dresses just like morrisey in old smiths videos, and has the big stupid fringe. He just stands there by himself at the bar getting his photo taken with people.

Yeah, I'm starting to more and more like the idea....I've discovered fanfics which are the be all and end all of disturbing fan obsession, it's basically MCR fans writing stories about how the band shag them and each other, which fair enough you think....but some are in fgraphic detail involving brothers in the band Confused
RickJamesBitch!

One thing you should look into is the Tupac online scene. Folk take it to ridiculous levels. Paying thousands for unheard tracks and originals. I know as I used to be really into him and go on the forums. Some guy Dante has like the holy grail of Tupac collections. Don't know if that's somethin you'd be interested in pursuing but just givin you a heads up.

Yeah, cheers thank you....open to all suggestions.....arranging to meet and elvis fanatic/impersonator dunno if i'll be able to hold back the laughter if any jumpsuits are involved haha....

Was looking for good hip hop/ rap one too thank you Very Happy
Emma

Just wondering Jason, is the book going to be sort of taking the piss out of these people, or analysing obsession etc?
Jason

I dunno, it's extremely easy to take the piss out of these people so I dunno if I wanna do it that way....I've got some books from borders today I'm going to read on the study of obsession.....
Emma

Yeah I don't know how you'd be able to make a book out of taking the piss out of them, unless it was one of those stocking filler books no one actually reads more than once... the second option sounds quite interesting though, good luck with it.

And you've probably thought of it but Nirvana fans? And Take That, fans camping days in advance for gigs and all that.
Jason

I have just signed up to a Nirvana forum last night not had time to have a proper look or anything yet though, Take That my sister is helping me with......
Emma

Oh my god I forgot Justin Timberlake!
I used to be OBSESSED, I probably should be embarassed, oh well.

that is a very interesting topic jason
do you have the angle of the book yet? or just collecting info?
are you going to do something special about babyshambles fans?
i have the feeling, i might be wrong tho, that you won't get anything spectacularly obsessive from the babyshambles fanbase (maybe the libertines, i don't know), well at least on forums, i don't know what you think but it strikes me that there's a sort of darwinian process going on round doherty related forums. A natural eviction of "enthusiastic fans", ironically they seem to get more sticks than people who spit at doherty (i say doherty rather than babyshambles cos when i saw enthusiastic behaviours, they were aimed at him more than at the band). So maybe, they don't dare to express themselves too much on forums, and then they kind of seem more apparent on tv, tho we know the carricaturing habit of hurried journalists (always wonder where the trilby army comes from when i see them in front of gigs venues when there are tv reports and stuff)... that or maybe they don't use forums to express their fanatism, but i'd be surprised if that was the case since doherty popularised the use of internet by his own use and by all the guerilla gigs business (it then seems less geekish to frequent forums in that particular context, i think).
Would you consider the forums as the chosen medium of (obsessive) fans since you're asking for testimony here? do they actually need to express themselves and find people like them or is it a solitary pleasure?

a couple of weeks ago, tokio hotel played here in brussels and there was a little radio report on the family living in front of the venue the band played (one of the most famous venue of belgium), the father guy said that in twenty years time they never witnessed as much "craziness" in front of the venue, i think they had a record of number of faintings during the gig, i often hear the tokio hotel fan thing compared to the beatlemania era, maybe there's something to look for on their forums... but i don't know if it will bring something "conclusive" for your book, i have the feeling it is just a matter of youth (teenagers eager to find their identity, to feel different like, and maybe today it's stronger because of the growing genericness of our society, but that's another debate) and the fact that young people nowadays have more leisure time and more money to spend...
oh and the most disturbing thing i saw on tv (might have talked about this here already) was a guy who recorded him while peeling off his skin for björk cos he was furious she was going out with a black man at the time... she seems to have a pretty disturbing fanbase as well, i remember her getting all paranoid like at some point, beating paparazzis at an airport or something.
i don't know it seems like every fanbase have its own characteristics depending on the music style (mainstream or not), the lyrics (if it is unifying) and the singer personnality (and the relationship s/he has with the fans)... there must be differences as well between decades, maybe it would be interesting to compare them, but i don't know if you should mix music styles then... are there music genres more suitable for obsessiveness? i think there's some major differences between mainstream fans and underground fans. Does the fanbase change when the band get more mainstream?
haha i'm going to stop here, i'm really sorry i'm getting carried away stating the obvious and asking you questions, anyway congratulations for the idea, best of luck with it really!
oh and maybe eminem has a freaky fanbase since he wrote a song about it?
Jason

I spoke to Adam this morning, who is gonna maybe answer some questions for me on the phenomona around the whole Pete/Baby shambles/Libertines obsession.

I am collating info just now, but definitely won't be a piss take as now I have literally hundreds of bits of information, I dunno what angle it's getting tackled from yet, I have been looking up on DJ Ox which is one of the most extreme versions of fan obsession, namely as a fan hung around near him for many years, engratiated herself in his inner circle, started dating him, then killed him.....baby shambles fans are on a lower end of the spectrum really, but in the UK they are still the strngest band of recent years with the obsession.

MCR management I have been emailing back and forth with but they said they can't give me a definitive answer on it......not even gonna attempt to get a question to Morrissey emailed the Mark E Smith fan club, as the fall fans are pretty obsessive and picky......

THe information is coming together, from fans, bands, management and whoever else...it's been a lot of fun if I'm honest......speaking to people I wouldn't usually has been an experience Smile
Mel

that was really interesting.....and your english is fantastic Very Happy
Jason

It seems regardless of genre obsession is very much apparant......

But decade is extremely apparant, with fall fans and smiths fans it's very much like oneupsmanship on each other to see who is the greatest fan, more contemporary acts basically develop a community around the similar interest they have.....It's difficult to pinpoint where that change happened.....

Also, I have noticed some popular bands have absolutely no obsessives....a band like Belle And Sebastian have plenty of loyal fans.......but no obsessives, so there must be something there that triggers obsession over respect and simple hero worship, I am reading a book on obsession (the logic behind it not just about people who are obsessive)

It's really interesting, in it's early stages.....swimming amongst paper but still really interesting me, which is a good sign I guess.

i'd be really interested to read what he has to say on the subject really! can you do a little a report here once you interviewed him?

Jason wrote:

they have quite a distinctive look indeed, but isn't it more of a libertines diluted fanbase? or maybe yeah doherty is a character easy to relate to in a way, the eternal teenager, the beautiful loser©, it is a universal character like.

Jason wrote:
as the fall fans are pretty obsessive and picky......

didn't know about their fanbase! they seem fairly underground, but maybe that's just my ignorance and the fact they're totally unknown here, i was wondering if the lack of "strong obsessiveness" on shambles forum was due to the music genre, you know it's not really "punk" to get all fanboy/girl-ish, but as the fall are obviously higher on the punk scale (or am i wrong? i'm so bad with labelling genres), it is just what you said :

Jason wrote:
It seems regardless of genre obsession is very much apparant......

what about the mainstreamness? i mean it seems like mainstream bands with unifying lyrics have younger fans that express strongly their 'love' but it doesn't last (like boys bands stuff, thinking about it, maybe you should look in the reader's corners -??? don't know if it's the good phrase- in music magazines, is it me or there are less fan letters than before?), as opposed to bands that write stuff meaningful to them, it seems to touch fans differently, deeper and longer, and at different ages... have you thought about doing a typology of fans?

Jason wrote:

maybe it's a personnality thing, or the fact they seem quite secretive, i don't know, very people-next-door like, and maybe the lack of media coverage. oh god, again all this is really interesting, do keep us informed with what you got please.

You should be ashamed haha, but here you go:

"He moans out, partially from pleasure and partly out of dislike for the confines of his tightening jeans. His hips buck upwards begging for flesh to flesh contact as I rub him through his pants, still lapping at his neck. My name leaves his lips, camouflaged by moans. Intoxication was plastered on his face. Eyes closed and jaw slacked, giving him a look as though he's just been spent, when it's just started.
I watch as my baby pants and quivers before I press my lips on his, licking at him, silently begging for entrance. His lips part and his tongue slides over mine, venturing into my mouth. The taste of candy and cigarettes filled me and I wanted nothing more than to be inside him. I stopped rubbing the bulge in his jeans and undid them, exposing Mr.Iero Jr. who had already made his presence evident. "

From the hit story "Sex and Candy" by some MCR fan.

They are written by people of all ages which kind of worries me, which answers the question about the mainstream success of a band......with a band like the beatles or the smiths, an element of sanctity and sophistication is left.....with bands such as MCR (they have 250+ fanfictions on that site alone and PATD who have the largest at 350+) the age group is a lot lower but the way their love for a band is shown lacks any sort of decency (the fanfictions have fans sleeping with the band, the band sleeping with each other - which basically on occasion involves incest, the band sleeping with other bands)

You won't get one where Andy Rourke is having a hard day and Morrissey starts massaging his shoulders and one thing leads to another haha....

hahahaaa this is the best thing ever
didn't know what to do with my saturday, now i know, thank you jason <3

so according to you the "sophistication" or the "decency" in the fanatism is due to the largeness of the fanbase as well as the age? did i get this right?
i have to confess that i have never ever heard any songs from mcr, but isn't the quality of the lyrics a bit poor? maybe that's what lead people to write undecent stuff? i mean it must take more courage to take a pencil and write when you're a morissey fan
and isn't there a class/political element that could explain the way fans act? just here, there seem to be a difference between right wingish fans and left wingish ones, the most obsessive fans, or so it seems to me, are those who are clearly attracted by the 'classical' side of pete, all the use of the albion mythology thing, and the references to "classical" writers, the praise of the old england. but again those people are generally young, so it may just be that.
sometimes they remind me of football supporters, you know the need of showing off you belong to a great country. the oasis/blur fans clash might be interesting on that matter (i mean the class thing more than the political side).

You girls have waaaaay too much time on your hands to even contemplate reading that stuff....I did so purely for research purposes. *cough*

The Smiths probably have a much larger fanbase than MCR, Same with The Beatles...the age of the fan may be seen as irrespective as well, it may be the scene of music the fans are involved in, if the boards are visited by anyone here musical merits (great lyricists, chrod progression inventive melody) mean very little to them, whereas most fans have upwards of 1000+ pictures of the band on their computer.

Oh I would not want to anger Morrissey, there is enough dubiety over his sexuality without me writing stories about it haha
